White House Rose Garden

White House Rose Garden

Walnut Hill Landscape Company is deeply honored to have played a key role in the renovation of the historic White House Rose Garden. Collaborating with Oehme van Sweden Landscape Architects (OvS), the Office of the Chief Usher of the White House, the Committee for the Preservation of the White House (CPWH), and the National Park Service, we contributed to the thoughtful renewal of this iconic space.

Guided by The White House Rose Garden Landscape Report developed by OvS, the renovation adhered to the original vision of Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon’s 1962 design during the Kennedy Administration. The report provided a framework for restoring the garden’s historic footprint while enhancing it to meet modern needs, ensuring its timeless relevance for future generations.

The renovated Rose Garden now offers universal accessibility, featuring elegant limestone perimeter paving that frames the lawn and provides seamless access. Upgrades include a state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage system as well as advanced electrical infrastructure to support modern lighting and media technology, ensuring the garden’s functionality for both ceremonial and everyday use.

The horticultural enhancements are equally impressive. The garden’s palette now includes over 200 additional rose bushes, carefully selected for their ability to thrive in the space. A diverse array of perennials adds texture and seasonal interest, while a new variety of boxwood, resistant to disease, defines the garden’s classic parterres.

Each element of the renovation reflects a balance of cultural and historical significance with contemporary principles of sustainability, accessibility, and horticultural excellence. Today, the White House Rose Garden remains a symbol of beauty and resilience, welcoming all First Families and representing the people of the United States of America.

Walnut Hill is proud to have contributed to this enduring legacy, combining craftsmanship, expertise, and a shared vision with our partners to create a garden that transcends administrations and generations.
