The clients were interested in transforming their tired family home into a place where they could entertain their grandchildren and other family members. During the initial meeting the wife told us that she would love a pool but her husband was against it. After seeing the potential, we took the husband to several properties that we had previously completed. Soon the husband was on board with one stipulation: the project needed to be complete by April 1st as they were having a surprise birthday party for their son who was ill. As it was August, we were up to the task and began the design process that would include a pool, patio large enough for entertaining, fireplace, plantings, and a separation from the driveway on the approach to the house. Since the space was small, a simple, elevated rectangular pool with negative edge was designed to take advantage of the view towards the water, maintaining the edge of the pool for seating. The raised pool and stone planters created pockets for colorful plantings to soften the space and provide year round interest. The fireplace was built into the stone walls to provide visual interest and a gathering place for those cool evenings. A four foot stone wall was fashioned to separate the space from the driveway at the entrance to the property. This entrance was highlighted by stone columns. To finish the project, a mix of low voltage and metal halide lighting was installed. The end result was a property that family and friends could enjoy any hour of the day or night.
