One of the most rewarding parts of this business is when a satisfied client calls you back to do more work! Our client called us to say they had found the house of their dreams but wanted to create an outdoor living space to fit their lifestyle. Having worked with this client on two previous homes made this special project even more so. Annapolis is well known for narrow streets and small lots. This site is no exception to that rule. Our client’s new outdoor space needed to accommodate large parties while still retaining the feeling of a family back yard. With that challenge in mind, we constructed 18” custom blended stone walls that are used for seating; this creates much needed places to sit without taking up valuable “floor” space. A summer Kitchen with Spanish cedar pergola above was designed to make summer time barbeques fun for all to enjoy. A stone fireplace was carefully designed to not only act as the focal point from inside and out but to also provide warmth on cool evenings. A custom designed Spanish cedar fence and 8’ Foster Hollies were used to provide privacy to this intimate space. The road is a mere 10 feet from the patio. Low voltage lighting was installed to accent the landscape and extend the entertaining well into the evening hours. Two large crape myrtles frame the stone fire place while Knock Out roses and lush perennials soften the hardscape and provide long lasting seasonal color. The end result of this project left our client with an outdoor living space that can be used at any time throughout the year and a space they are proud to show friends.
Although this property is not waterfront it is within the critical area which required us to design the project to meet the strict guidelines. This limited the space available for the clients required design elements. The clients long list of must haves included a flagstone patio, stone walls, fire place, pergola, summer kitchen, lighting, irrigation, and plantings. Parking and staging of materials was an issue as the site was very small and off street parking was limited.
