Possibly one of the most prestigious roads in Annapolis, Melvin Road’s one mile long stretch along the South River is home to many beautiful homes including the client’s home featured here. The homeowner first worked with one of the country’s foremost landscape architecture firms to design the project. After a careful bidding process, we were awarded and entrusted with the job of creating a truly year round garden. The entire front yard transformation began by changing the shape and location of the driveway. Granite cobble stone curbs define the new tar and chip oval driveway. A combination of bluestone and brick were used to create the front entry walk while 2’x3’ bluestone slabs were used to create the paths through the garden. The original vast expanse of lawn was replaced with stunningly colorful gardens that are constantly changing. The early spring season comes to life with from over 10,000 bulbs that bloom at different times throughout the spring. As the bulbs are losing their color the Knock Out roses, perennials, and grasses take over to provide color and interest throughout out the rest of the year.
As with any waterfront property strict regulations had to be followed while working on this project. Most significantly, no more than 5000 square feet could be disturbed at a time. With more than 30,000 square feet to be planted or paved careful scheduling became crucial to completing the project. Because plantings were to be installed where the old asphalt driveway was located, sub soiling trenches needed to be completed to provide proper planting medium.
